The CEREC is a CAD/CAM system (Computer Aided Design, Computer Aided Manufacturer) that is designed specifically for the dental office. The technology has been around for over 20 years, but less than 8% of the dentists in the country currently own a CEREC machine.
The standard method of creating a crown involves taking an impression of the shaped tooth and sending the impression to a dental laboratory. We still use that standard method for many teeth. But for certain cases, we can create your new crown in one appointment.
A special picture is taken of your shaped tooth; and, with the CEREC software, we can design your crown in a matter of minutes. The design information is sent through a wireless connection to the milling machine in our office lab. Many of you have witnessed the milling of your new crown out of a solid block of porcelain.
With this technology, you won’t need to leave with a temporary crown; and, you don’t need a second appointment. We made this investment in new technology to help make your visits more convenient. Plus, it’s fun for us in the office to do! Most patients are amazed as they see the creation of their crown.
If you need a crown in the future, perhaps you and your tooth will be a candidate for “the CEREC experience”.
